Hawaii Theatre’s Student Acting & Apprenticeship Program

The pre-professional training program focuses on job skills in technical theatre. Students design their individual programs with local professional theatre designers/technicians to learn about lighting, sound, set and costume design, directing and/or stage management, and apply the skills they learn, working with professionals on the Hawaii Theatre Student Matiness Series presentations.

Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble

9th – 12th Graders, ages 13 – 18

Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble is a pre-professional training program for students who are serious about learning classical acting; this is not a drama club. The program is led by HTC education director and Po‘okela Award-winning actress Eden-Lee Murray. Students meet twice a week after school to learn acting, voice and movement technique, and to rehearse and perform a full Shakespeare production at the Hawaii Theatre in the Spring. The program includes master classes with top local theatre professionals. For the audition, students should prepare a monologue between 1 and 2 minutes long from any published play. They also should bring contact information for a teacher or director with whom they have recently worked.


Hawaii Theatre Intermediate Ensemble

7th – 10th Graders, ages 12 to 15

HTYE-hamlet-7901A new program designed for O`ahu students age 12 – 15. This acting program is designed for students who have had some theatre experience and are interested in learning more about performance technique. Led by HTC Education Director Eden Lee Murray, the class will include theatre games, improvisation, as well as an introduction to text analysis, whether for audition monologues or short scenes.


Hawaii Theatre Junior Ensemble

6th – 8th Graders, ages 10 to 12

Hawaii Theatre Junior Ensemble is an introductory acting program led by HTC education director and Po‘okela Award-winning actress Eden-Lee Murray. The program will consist of theatre games, creative dramatics, improvisation and basic acting techniques, with an emphasis on creative collaboration as well as performance skills. The second semester includes introductory work/theatre games with Shakespeare.


Hawaii Theatre Apprentice Program

9th – 12th Graders, ages 13 – 18

Hawaii Theatre Apprentice Program is an opportunity for students interested in exploring careers in set design, lighting design, costume design, stage management or directing. In addition to participating in the master classes offered to the Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble, apprentices are individually mentored by local professionals in their particular area of stagecraft, and are allowed to work on the Student Matinee productions under the supervision of their mentors.
