After-School Programs

Hawaii Theatre Center offers three levels of after-school acting programs for middle and high school students, and a technical theatre apprenticeship program for high school students.

Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble

Grades 9-12, ages 13-18

Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble is a pre-professional training program for students who are serious about learning advanced acting techniques; this is not a drama club.

The program is led by HTC education director and Po‘okela Award-winning actress Eden Lee Murray. Students meet Tuesdays and Thursdays, 4:30 to 6:30 pm from September to May, to receive instruction in acting, voice and movement technique, and to learn professional rehearsal protocols and etiquette. Students also participate in master classes with top local theatre professionals. The program culminates with a full-scale Shakespeare production at the Hawaii Theatre in the spring.

Participation in the program is by audition only. Auditions are held in June, July and August each year. For information call (808) 791-1323, or email Eden Lee Murray.

Hawaii Theatre Intermediate Ensemble

Grades 7-10, ages 12-15

This acting program is for students who have completed a year or more in Junior Ensemble or who have had some theatre experience and are interested in learning more about performance technique. Led by HTC Education Director Eden Lee Murray, classes include theatre games, improvisation, and an introduction to techniques for character creation and text analysis. Students work with monologues in the fall and short scenes in the spring.

Classes meet on Mondays, 4 to 6 pm, September to April. No audition is necessary, but an informal interview is required for admission. Call (808) 791-1323, or email Eden Lee Murray to set up an appointment.

Hawaii Theatre Junior Ensemble

Grades 6-8, ages 10-12

The Junior Ensemble is an introductory acting program led by HTC Education Director Eden Lee Murray. Classes introduce students to theatre games, creative dramatics, improvisation and basic acting techniques, with an emphasis on creative collaboration and ensemble-building skills as well as performance.

Classes meet on Wednesdays, 4 to 5:30 pm, September to April. No audition is necessary, but an informal interview is required for admission. Call (808) 791-1323, or email Eden Lee Murray to set up an appointment.

Technical Theatre Apprenticeship Program

Grades 9-12, ages 13-18

ht-apprentice-program2Our Technical Theatre Apprentice Program focuses on jobs skills in technical theatre, and offers a terrific opportunity for students interested in exploring careers in set design, lighting design, costume design, stage management or directing. In addition to participating in the master classes offered to the Hawaii Theatre Young Actors Ensemble, apprentices are individually mentored by local professionals in their particular area of stagecraft, and are allowed to work on the Student Matinee productions under the supervision of their mentors.

This program runs September to May. Students interested in applying for an HTC Technical Theatre apprenticeship must interview for their discipline of choice before the end of August. Call (808) 791-1323 or email Eden Lee Murray.
