SHOWTIME! School Matinee Series

Each year the Hawaii Theatre Educational Programming Project reaches thousands of Hawaii’s children through programming geared specifically for student matinee performances. The Hawaii Theatre Center SHOWTIME! Student matinee series has drawn thousands of students to the historic theatre to experience the wonders of performance. SHOWTIME! Student matinee series events offer, unique and captivating educational productions geared especially for students in length and content while being guided by current science, history, social studies and cross-curricular standards.

Over the years, Hawaii Theatre has hosted many performance partners that provided wonderful student matinee performances. Some of these partners include the Honolulu Dance Theatre: University of Hawaii Outreach College; the Honolulu Theatre for Youth; and, with the support of the State Foundation of Culture and the Arts, the Hawaii Theatre Center produced their own student matinee series titled “From Broadway to the Silver Screen.”

This year, Hawaii Theatre Center again produces a student matinee series titled “Showtime at the Hawaii Theatre.” This production, made possible by a generous grant from the James and Abigail Campbell Foundation, makes its première specifically to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students from the Leeward area.

Complete with educational materials for teachers, “Showtime at the Hawaii Theatre” spotlights a multi-media history of the Hawaii Theatre, an interactive viewing of the 1923 silent film “Hula Honeymoon” accompanied by the Hawaii Theatre’s 1400-pipe Robert Morton Unified Orchestral Theatre Organ, and a “magic” demonstration of stage effects. Local personality Tiny Tadani, with special friends, acts as Master of Ceremonies for this fun filled hour-long performance.

SHOWTIME! Student matinee series offerings are either created and produced by the Hawaii Theatre Center, such as the popular “Showtime at the Hawaii Theatre,” “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Rumplestiltskin,” “Sleeping Beauty: The Musical,” “The Tempest,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Twelfth Night,” “The Snow Queen,” “Wishes and Wings,” and “As You Like It” productions; or presented in cooperation with Performance Partners.
