Richard M. Towill & The Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame present
THE 26TH ANNUAL
KA HIMENI ANA

September 10, 2010

Friday; 7:00 PM

Tickets:
$20 - $30

No Discounts

For 26 years, KA HIMENI ANA Hawaiian music competition has perpetuated Hawaiian history through traditional singing styles often described as “backyard” (informal) or nahenahe (soft and sweet). Founded by local Hawaiian music advocate Richard M. Towill, this music competition celebrates the intimate nahenahe style of Hawaiian music.

Hearing music without microphones or amplified instruments and sung completely in the Hawaiian language, audiences are captivated and experience a journey into an earlier time of Hawai’i nei. The sweet vocal harmonies are accompanied by the lulling, unamplified sounds of the ukulele, acoustic guitar, and other acoustic instruments used by Hawaiians prior to 1931.

According to Towill’s son Rick, Towill started this competition “to bring old-style Hawaiian music back to the forefront as part of the renaissance of Hawai’i, to encourage and promote this style of music, and to sponsor undiscovered talent, giving them a place to start their music careers.“

Contestants are evaluated on their musicality, including pitch, harmony, projection, and other aspects of performance. Song selections composed by the performers themselves or created prior to 1945 will be sung in the Hawaiian language and in the nahenahe style, featuring a soft and gentle voice.

KA HIMENI ANA serves as a stepping-stone for artists into the Hawaiian music industry. Groups such as Holunape, ‘Ale’a, Ho’okena (which entered as Kipona Leo Hawai’i), Kanilau and Pilioha have won this competition, which launched their artistic success. Approximately 10 musical groups will compete for monetary prizes and other benefits.

!!! The Original Silent Vampire Classic !!!

"Is that your wife?...What a lovely throat."

This 1922 silent film will be underscored throughout by the
Hawaii Theatre Orchestral Organ.

Mr. John McCreary- Maestro

This classic silent version of "Dracula" remains
F. W. Murnau's unparalleled masterpiece of horror.
Often remade, but never duplicated for sheer poetic terror.

As noted critic Pauline Kael observed, "... this first important film of the vampire genre has more spectral atmosphere, more ingenuity, and more imaginative ghoulish ghastliness than any of its successors."

Some really good vampire movies have been made since Kael wrote those words, but German director F.W. Murnau's 1922 version remains a definitive adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.

Created when German silent films were at the forefront of visual technique and experimentation, Murnau's classic is remarkable for its creation of mood and setting, and for the unforgettably creepy performance of Max Schreck as Count Orlok, a.k.a. the blood-sucking predator Nosferatu. With his rodent-like features and long, bony-fingered hands, Schreck's vampire is an icon of screen horror, bringing pestilence and death to the town of Bremen in 1838. (These changes of story detail were made necessary when Murnau could not secure a copyright agreement with Stoker's estate.)

Using negative film, double-exposures, and a variety of other in-camera special effects, Murnau created a vampire classic that still holds a powerful influence on the horror genre. (Werner Herzog's 1978 film Nosferatu the Vampyre is both a remake and a tribute, and Francis Coppola adopted many of Murnau's visual techniques for Bram Stoker's Dracula.)

Seen today, Murnau's film is more of a fascinating curiosity, but its frightening images remain effectively eerie.

Tickets:
$27 - $39 - $47

Acoustic guitarist LEO KOTTKE returns to the Hawaii Theatre! Focusing primarily on instrumental composition and playing, Kottke has sporadically moved in a vocal direction, singing in an unconventional yet expressive baritone famously self-described as sounding like "geese farts on a muggy day". In concert, Kottke intersperses humorous and often bizarre monologues with vocal and instrumental selections from throughout his career, played solo on his signature 6- and 12-string guitars.

To observe him without his knowing it, she disguises herself as the boy, Ganymede, and launches all kinds of not-so-courtly mayhem while teaching Orlando the finer points of how to woo his lady (herself!) In the meantime, Phebe, an importunate shepherdess, falls in love with the beautiful Ganymede, much to the distress of Silvius, the simple shepherd who adores her.
