Hawaii Opera Theatre’s Opera Express returns to the Hawaii Theatre stage with Gilbert and Sullivan’s classic comic operetta THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE.

Comic mayhem ensues when a rollicking band of pirates plots to keep young Frederick from leaving their employ. Mistakenly apprenticed as a child by a deaf nursemaid, Frederick was to be freed on his 21st birthday, but alas, born on February 29–technically he’s only 5. Sparkling melodies and witty banter make this child-friendly interactive adaptation a delight. Appropriate for children in grades K-8, the show runs just under an hour, so it won’t be a late night for young audiences.

This opera adventure is interactive, and adding to the fun will be seven young assistants picked from the audience – 2 pirates, 2 policemen, 2 lovely English sisters and one prisoner – who will help the multi-tasking professionals tell the story. Parents bringing children to the public performance may go to www.hotpirates.weebly.com to find files for the interactive music that audiences will be asked to sing during the performance as well as the HOT Education Guide, with a synopsis and history of the operetta, fun activity pages and other information to enrich this performance experience.

HTC’s educational programming is sponsored in part by ABC Stores, Ananda Fund Hawaii of the Hawaii Community Foundation, E.H.W.
