Kupuna Movie Mornings – “THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW” (1975)
PRESENTED BY The Hawaii Theatre and and the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation
Few movies define “cult classic” as much as 1975’s ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show.’ A critically panned flop upon release, it went on to become a staple of midnight showings and is now considered the longest-running theatrical release in cinematic history, having grossed more than $170 million. In 2005, the film was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Based on a London stage production, ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is a campy homage to science fiction flicks and low budget horror movies. It stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as a hapless young couple and features a legendary performance by Tim Curry as mad scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter. The soundtrack is loaded with songs that just scream for a singalong, such as “Sweet Transvestite,” “Hot Patootie – Bless My Soul,” and, of course, “The Time Warp.”
So what is behind the quirky films undying popularity? “For a lot of people, Rocky Horror is like their home, it’s their connection to everybody – all their friends,” says Larry Viezel of The Rocky Horror Picture Show Official Fan Club. “I know of a lot of people whose lives were saved by this movie. Especially for those in the LGBT community, it’s a place where they could be themselves and find people who were their family. I don’t want to give that up. I want people to still have a place to be.”
While ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is world famous as a midnight movie, thanks to Hawaii Theatre Center and the Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation, you can enjoy this beloved cult classic as part of Kupuna Movie Mornings. Costumes and singing along are encouraged, but please help us maintain our historic venue by not throwing objects such as toast, water, toilet paper, hot dogs, rice, etc. in the theatre. Anyone doing so will be asked to leave.
