PRESENTED BY Hawaii LGBT Legacy Foundation & Hawaii Theatre Center
Step into a world of royal splendor and timeless music with Rodgers & Hammerstein’s beloved classic, ‘The King and I,’ at the historic Hawaii Theatre on July 14. Starring Yul Brynner in his iconic Academy Award-winning role alongside Deborah Kerr, this lavish 1956 film adaptation brings unforgettable songs like “Getting to Know You,” “Shall We Dance?” and “Something Wonderful” to life on the big screen.
Set in 1860s Siam, the story follows the spirited English schoolteacher Anna Leonowens as she arrives at the royal court to educate the King’s children, sparking a powerful cultural clash, unexpected friendship, and touching romance. Winner of five Academy Awards, ‘The King and I’ remains one of the most celebrated movie musicals of all time.
Join us for an enchanting morning of classic cinema in one of Hawaii’s most treasured landmarks.
Please note that there will be a short intermission about halfway through the film along with an overture at the beginning.
