Hollywood musicals have a reputation for being light, frothy, and fun. Bob Fosse’s 1972 film ‘Cabaret’ is a notable exception, and is arguably one of the darkest musicals ever made.
‘Cabaret’ takes place in 1931 Germany. The freewheeling, bohemian spirit of the Weimar Republic is coming to an end, as the Nazis are quickly rising in power. The film focuses on American singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli), a performer at the Kit Kat Klub, and her relationship with English academic Brian Roberts (Michael York). Joel Grey co-stars as the menacing master of ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub. The specter of fascism provides a sinister undercurrent to the movie, which grows stronger as the story progresses.
Nearly all of the songs in the film are performed by Minnelli or Grey, including classics such as “Money, Money,” “Willkommen,” “Mein Herr,” and of course the title track, which became one of Minnelli’s signature numbers. All but one song take the form of performances at the Kit Kat Klub.
‘Cabaret’ was adapted from a Tony Award-winning Broadway musical of the same name, which was in turn based on the play ‘I Am Camera’ by John Van Druten. All were inspired by the autobiographical fiction of Christopher Isherwood, who lived in Germany from 1929 to 1932. The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning eight of them, including Best Actress for Liza Minnelli, Best Supporting Actor for Joel Grey, and Best Director for Bob Fosse.
“This is no ordinary musical,” wrote legendary film critic Roger Ebert. “Part of its success comes because it doesn't fall for the old cliché that musicals have to make you happy. Instead of cheapening the movie version by lightening its load of despair, director Bob Fosse has gone right to the bleak heart of the material and stayed there well enough to win an Academy Award for Best Director.”
