Corona Virus Update

We are taking steps to inform our audience that all HTC performances are being evaluated on a case by case basis.  As a private non-profit Historic Theatre venue, the decision for a show to go on as scheduled, or if the show will be postponed to a later date, is often times at the discretion of the show promoter, artist or presenting organization.

The safety and security of our audiences and employees is HTC’s highest priority, and in rescheduling certain performances, we are following the lead of our city, state, and federal elected officials as well as the recommendations of the Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).

*** OUT OF AN ABUNDANCE OF CAUTION, THE HAWAII THEATRE WILL CONTINUE TO REQUIRE ALL PATRONS ATTENDING IN PERSON PERFORMANCES PRESET PROOF OF BEING 100% VACCINATED AGAINST COVID OR PROVIDE PROOF OF A NEGATIVE COVID TEST TAKEN NO MORE THAN 48 HOURS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE PERFORMANCE. NO PERSONS WILL BE ALLOWED INSIDE OF THE THEATRE UNLESS THEY PROVIDE PROOF OF A NEGATIVE COVID TEST, OR PROVIDE PROOF THEY ARE FULLY VACCINATED. MASKS MUST BE WORN AT ALL TIMES WHILE INSIDE OF THE THEATRE  ***

The Hawaii Theatre as a venue will be maintaining the vaccine card and testing requirement for all patrons in our facility through at least April 28th, 2022, in addition to the requirement that masks are required by patrons and talent while in the facility and not actively performing on stage.  We are following the lead of the Broadway League and their associated theatrical venues in maintaining requirements for the health and safety of our patrons.

We have two major reasons for taking this stance.

The first reason is it is our belief that our shows have been marketed and sold to patrons with the safety inferred by the requirement for people to show proof of vaccination or negative Covid test to enter our facility.  This is important because we feel that we must respect what has been represented to the public in our marketing and on our ticketing site, and that patrons who purchased tickets for the shows knowing that such regulations were for their safety deserve to enjoy their time at the theatre without the added stress or worry over who may now be admitted without the requirements.

The second main reason is that it’s an undisputed fact that sitting in a closed space in close proximity to others could increase the risk of contracting Covid, yet through Theatre’s very strict safety protocols and vaccination/testing policy we have a perfect track record of zero instances of community spread in our facility year to date.  The reputational damage to the Theatre from an outbreak at one of our shows would be immense if we were to throw caution to the wind and abandon practices we know work to stem the spread of an active virus in our community.  The damage could extend to adversely affecting our ability to attract ticket buyers to other shows, and lead to forced governmental shutdowns of our facility and adverse financial effects from additional canceled shows.  There is also individual risk associated with patrons attending shows with an expectation of safety falling ill and assigning blame to the theatre for not maintaining safety protocols voluntarily.  Please visit the Hawaii State Department of Health website for more information on their guidance recommending masks be worn in “crowded settings”  https://hawaiicovid19.com/mask-guidance/.

We are monitoring the landscape regularly, and do hope at some point we will be in a position where the testing and or vaccination requirements may be lifted.  However, for theatrical venues, we believe it is better to err on the side of caution and provide our patrons, staff and talent with a venue that is safely operated at time when there is still uncertainty on the public health effects of relaxing community health guidelines for pubic venues.

The HTC Box Office will be taking a “Brief  Intermission” and WILL NOT BE AVAILABLE FOR WALK-UP BUSINESS, as we ensure that our staff are safely observing the state’s recommended COVID-19 practices.  Fortunately, we have the technological ability to continue our Office operations remotely.

Because most tickets sold through our box office are non-refundable at the request of the artist or the producer, we will email your tickets for the new date when a date is set each of the affected performances.  Tickets won’t be sent out until the new date is set, so please be patient with us as we work through the backlog of tickets we need to issue.  All patrons who purchase a Hawaii Theatre Presents Show will be offered the full value of their tickets as an exchange toward the purchase of a Hawaii Theatre Center Gift Card or for another show of their choice.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this uncertain time.  Please remember that the small businesses and non-profits in our community rely on your patronage and support.  Support we are all incredibly grateful for.
